A2255: the First Detection of Filamentary Polarized Emission in a Radio Halo
نویسندگان
چکیده
A deep radio observation of the A2255 cluster of galaxies has been carried out at 1.4 GHz with the Very Large Array synthesis telescope. Thanks to the excellent (u,v) coverage and sensitivity achieved by our observation, the low brightness diffuse extended sources in the cluster (radio halo and relic) have been imaged with unprecedented resolution and dynamic range. We find that the radio halo has filamentary structures that are strongly polarized. The fractional linear polarization reaches levels of ≃ 20−40% and the magnetic fields appear ordered on scales of ∼400 kpc. This is the first successful attempt to detect polarized emission from a radio halo and provides strong evidence that in this cluster the magnetic field is ordered on large scales.

The intracluster magnetic field power spectrum in Abell 2255
Aims. The goal of this work is to constrain the strength and structure of the magnetic field in the nearby cluster of galaxies A2255. At radio wavelengths A2255 is characterized by the presence of a polarized radio halo at the cluster center, a relic source at the cluster periphery, and several embedded radio galaxies. The polarized radio emission from all these sources is modified by Faraday r...
متن کاملMagnetic Fields in Clusters of Galaxies Obtained Through the Study of Faraday Rotation Measures
We are developing a new approach to investigate cluster magnetic field strengths and structures. It is based on the comparison of simulated Rotation Measure and radio halo images, obtained from 3dimensional multi-scale cluster magnetic fields models, with observations. This approach is applied to A2255 in which wide diffuse radio emissions and Rotation Measure images show the evidence of cluste...
متن کاملDetection of diffuse radio emission at large distance from the center of the galaxy cluster A 2255
Aims. Low-frequency radio observations of galaxy clusters are the key to detecting the diffuse extended emission associated with them. The presence and properties of such radio sources in galaxy clusters reveal the existence of magnetic fields on a large scale and allow theories to be tested concerning both the origin of relativistic particles in the ICM and their propagation. Methods. A deep r...
متن کاملObservation of Extended Red Emission ( ERE ) in the halo of M 82 ⋆
Low-dispersion spectra have been obtained from 4000 to 9600Å along the axis and across the dusty halo of the galaxy M82. The spectra of the halo are explained in terms of scattering of the galactic light by dust grains: when divided by the spectrum of the galaxy, they reveal a broad emission band, similar to, although wider than the bump of Extended Red Emission (ERE) commonly observed in galac...
متن کاملTesting the cosmic ray content in galaxy clusters
The effective content of cosmic rays (CR) in galaxy clusters remains elusive. The evidence of relativistic electrons (RE) in the subset of clusters endowed with a radio halo remains hardly quantitative in the absence of robust estimates of the magnetic field B(r), derived from Faraday Rotation (FR) measurements. The content in relativistic protons (RP) requires a different approach, the only di...
